7th & 8th Grade

Every year the upper grades are involved in numerous activities that require additional funding. So, fund-raising (in addition to Hearts on Fire and the Marathon) has become part and parcel for the 7th and 8th grades’ school year. The activities include an annual class trip that on alternating years is either a servant event or an out-of-town class field trip. In some years the class has done both. In 2009, the students attended a weekend Creation Seminar in Moorhead, a week-long servant event at Lutheran Island Camp, and then traveled to the Sonshine Christian Music Festival in Willmar. The fund-raising events vary greatly from year to year but usually involve the food stand at the Reformation Festival, Kid’s Kamp child care during Hearts on Fire, and Prince of Peace nights at House of Pizza in Sartell. Every year we look for new ideas and this year we have already latched onto a gift-wrapping shift at Barnes and Noble on December 4, so we’ll see you there for Prince of Peace Day! The students get excited each year as they work toward their fundraising goal of fully funding all of their off-campus trips. They also tithe their earnings each year and are always determined to leave a substantial amount of “seed-money” for next year’s group. If you have any fund-raising ideas please let us know. Thank you again for all of your support.

PRINCE OF PEACE COMPETING IN NEWS BOWL

Mr. Hahn’s seventh grade class will be competing in the News Bowl Online Current Events League this year. It is a current events contest between teams from schools throughout the United States. Each month the students will compete in a fifty question contest covering current events from the current month. The POP team will prepare for their monthly contest by studying current event PowerPoints presented in the classroom. Mr. Hahn believes that this new activity will certainly enhance lifelong learning and citizenship skills for our middle-level students.

Just in…the results from Mr. Hahn’s seventh grade class September NewsBowl contest! The contest is a fifty question exam presented online and involves current events from the past 30 days. The questions are from five categories covering both worldwide and national news. There were 365 seventh grade teams that competed nationally and the POP seventh grade team’s score tied for 13th place. In the statewide contest, there were 34 seventh grade teams and POP’s score tied for 4th place. Congratulations to the Ferocious Four! (That’s their team name.) Way to go!! We’ll look forward to the contest results for the October contest.

Congratulations to the 7th Grade as they competed successfully in the October News Bowl national current events competition. The POP team’s score tied for tenth place nationally against 438 other 7th grade teams. Statewide, the team achieved a very respectable fifth place out of 38 teams. News Bowl is an online current events league that competes each month. The POP team prepares for their monthly contest by studying PowerPoints and handouts presented in the classroom. A new fun way to learn and enhance citizenship skills for our middle-level students by staying informed.

Congratulations again to the 7th Grade as they competed successfully in the November NEWSBOWL national current events competition. The POP team’s score tied for twelfth place nationally against 251 other 7th grade teams. Statewide, the team achieved a very respectable sixth place out of 28 teams. WHY CHOOSE CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

At Prince of Peace it is the belief that our role as educators "to impart the tools of success" applies to the student's faith life even more so than to academics. The students in our school today are the church leaders of tomorrow and God will use them to steer His church and keep it Scripturally accurate. We only have these young people for a moment before they chart their own course so we must take advantage of every opportunity that we are given to share in the guidance and shaping of these young lives that God has placed in our instructional care.

The demands of a modern, time-hungry world steal from today's parents what in past generations were numerous opportunities to instruct within home Bible studies and regular family devotions. As our children pass through adolescence to young adulthood, they begin to throw away the wonders of childhood and trade them for an inquiry that demands answers.

Where they find these answers will affect their lives forever. The temptations are very real and our youth are on the front lines of this very real spiritual battle. The opportunity that Prince of Peace offers families to supplement and support the middle-school age student in their maturing faith-walk is beyond value. In addition to daily prayers and devotions, faith support is continual and divided between a wide range of studies.

The study of the Old and New Testaments (NIV) through the Voyages course illustrates in detail through course work and Bible study how since before Creation, God's truth has not changed.

A class favorite series,"That the World May Know", allows us through video, work sheets and discussion to be a part of a guided Bible tour of the Holy Land. We study the cultural influences of that time and of course discuss how these Bible stories apply to us today.

Through numerous other programs like the "Stranger Series" and "Life's Story, we seek additional understanding of practical applications of faith. And finally, within "The Lies of Evolution" studies each week we discuss other very real attacks on our faith coming from unexpected sources. The student's ability to recognize the science fiction called evolution is vital as a supplement to the young person's core knowledge of the truth of Divine Creation.

The students enjoy these areas of study and as a Christian educator, to personally be a part of their growth in faith knowledge quite often leaves me humbled as I see all that our Heavenly Father has done and continues to do in their lives.

CLASSROOM CORNER - Seventh & Eighth Grade

Greetings from the upper grades’ classroom! What a blessing it is each day as we have faith studies at POP. Whether within our devotions and prayers or formal Bible study, we are regularly in the Word daily. Praise God!

When I was my student’s age I had a misguided opinion of God. Perhaps part of it was the “fear-of-God” references my young ears overheard, or the “mostly Law sprinkled with a dash of Gospel” sermons, but whatever the cause, I imagined God as someone always wagging an angry finger at me…always warning and always threatening.

God used an 8th grade Lutheran classroom teacher named Mr. W.O. Johnson to straighten it all out for me. Mr. Johnson seemed immortal; he must have been as even my dad had him for a teacher! Mr. Johnson steered me in a new direction and it is that same direction I aim for with my students today.

I remind them of what a great gift the Bible is and how we dare not neglect it. As we read Scripture, I remind my students that God has and will continue to work miracles in their lives. We talk about how He is a just and merciful God capable of indescribable love and forgiveness who has chosen them each as His own.

I tell the students (as Mr. Johnson told me) that all our Lord asks of us is that we be His Great Commission people, living and sharing the Gospel with gentleness and kindness. Easy? No way. But the good news is that through Bible study and prayer God promises to strengthen us and guide us along the way, every minute of every day through that wonderful Spirit-filled gift called faith.

Thank you, Lord for people like Mr. Johnson! Amen. ~ Mr. Hahn

CLASSROOM CORNER - Seventh & Eighth Grade

Greetings from the 7th and 8th Grade Classroom!

Can you believe it – we are already past midterm and heading toward the end of the first trimester next month! Wow! We are all busy at POP, and in my classroom we are wondering where the weeks went. They just flew by. I reminded the students that time always flies by when you’re having fun; the response to that statement was what you might expect. Our lessons this year, as always, are all centered on the most important subject – our Lord and Savior. What a gift we have been blessed with at POP: to “be about” God’s work as the Holy Spirit guides our school and our studies. Our mission is simple – to give our Lord praise and glory first, foremost, and always. The privilege that we have as teachers and students to pray and worship together is a humbling and priceless benefit of our being here. Second, did you know that our POP 8th grade graduates are among the best prepared that arrive at our local high school doors? Our standard offering of academic excellence has become a POP tradition that we are very serious about and will strive to continue with our Heavenly Father’s guidance and preservation.

POP’s 7/8th Grade Servant Event ~ What a summer…

Yes, the new school year has begun, but it’s time to share a little about a POP summer event. What a great experience we had at Lutheran Island Camp on the upper-grade’s servant event trip. First and foremost was our appreciation for the fact that the camp is all about Jesus first and His love for us, a fact that at Lutheran Island Camp is declared loudly and proudly over and over. While there, some of us hammered and sawed, others painted and stained and some even had a chance to create a new forest trail. It wasn’t all service though as we had many camp activities to participate in which included Bible studies, time at the beach, campfires, devotion and worship time, square dancing (and a “regular” dance) and many other opportunities to make new friends and renew old acquaintances.

After our servant-week at camp, we then traveled to the Sonshine Music Festival at Willmar. We joined over 24,000 Christian music lovers for shows Friday night and Saturday with groups like Switchfoot, Relient K, and Toby Mac performing. A great way to wend a great week…praise God!

Thanks again to all of you for your prayers and financial support that made this wonderful trip possible. God bless you all!

"Thank you for being such an AWESOME teacher! I have learned soooo much in this class that I will use later in life (at least that is what everyone tells me). I can't wait for camp! Have a wonderful summer in the meantime!"

What keeps teachers teaching?

God strengthens us all daily in many ways and this note I recently received is near the top of the list of my answers when I'm asked why I'm at Prince of Peace.

~ Mr. Hahn

"Mr. Hahn, I'm so glad that you came to our school. I loved having you as a teacher! I really do feel ready for high school. Thank you!"

Short Answer/Essay:

God provided many opportunities for witnessing through the circumstances of Paul’s life. Describe a time when God used an event or a situation in your life as an opportunity for you to share the Gospel. OR Write about a time when God used an event or a situation in your life as an opportunity for someone else to share the Gospel with you.

This question recently appeared on a test which was answered by one of our graduates this year who has been attending Prince of Peace since Kindergarten. The answer shows what a strong, positive impact attending Prince of Peace Lutheran School has had in their life.

"Going to school (at Prince of Peace) has been a HUGE event in my life where others had the opportunity to share the Gospel with me. I learn about God from my parents and church but going to Prince of Peace for 9 years I think taught me so much about God that average Christians don’t learn. I really think I would be a completely different person and a less devoted Christian if it wasn’t for Prince of Peace."
